July 31, 2005 | A Midsummer Tale Contest Winners

Toasted Cheese is pleased to announce the winners of the 2005 A Midsummer Tale Writing Contest:

1st: Melissa A. Bartell, "Crossing the Mojave"

2nd: Christina Hallis, "Missing Sunrise in Charleston"

3rd (tie): Fatima M. Noronha, "Abbey Road and Mister Maniappa" and Devon Ellington, "Dog Driving"

Honorable Mention:
Ellia Bisker, "I Talk the Talk, He Rides the Bike"
Catherine Lanser, "Make Me Laugh"
Jenny Lentz, "Are We Honest Yet?: The Trip of Truth"
Joanna Popper, "In the Back of the Bolivian Bus with My Mom"
Toriano L. Porter, "The Pride of St. Louis"
Jim Walke, "Driving Directions."

This year we had a record-setting number of entries, not just for AMT, but for any Toasted Cheese contest ever. In addition, the quality of the entries made judging a challenge. So thanks to all who entered; Beaver very much enjoyed circumventing the world via your road trip stories! Special mention goes to Adrian S. Potter, Jeanette Hurt, Laurie Weed, S.B. Jonassen, & Jon Kohl, who also made the judge's short list.

Our youngest entrant this time around was 13. Keep writing, Marissa!

Our farthest-away entrant was one of our third place winners, Fatima Noronha, from Goa, India.

Props to Peter Anderson for the best title: "This Guy Probably Wants Change for a Confederate Thirteen Dollar Bill." Although, perhaps the real credit should go to his dad, Bob. ;-)

You can read the winning stories, as well as excerpts from the honorable mentions, in the September issue of Toasted Cheese.

The 2006 A Midsummer Tale Writing Contest opens May 1, 2006. Toasted Cheese's next contest is Three Cheers and a Tiger in September. Details on all our contests can be found here: http://www.toasted-cheese.com/contest.htm. Submissions to TC are welcome year-round: http://www.toasted-cheese.com/submit.htm.

July 15, 2005 | Timing Is Everything

This month at Absolute Blank, TC Editor Lisa Olson (Boots) writes about pacing your fiction so the timing is just right.

In writing, timing can be critical. If your story goes too fast, your readers could miss important details. If your story goes too slow, your readers could become bored and put the book away. Keep your writing balanced and you'll keep your readers interested.
